FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
November 1, 2024
Toronto, ON, Canada / Kingston, Jamaica – Jamaica’s national curling teams have advanced to the semi-finals after winning their final games of B-Division round robin play at the Pan Continental Championship in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada.
Both the men’s team and women’s team will play their respective semi-final games today against
Kazakhstan, an established program that finished with a 6 win, 2 loss record at the World Mixed
Championships in Scotland two weeks ago.
The semi-final winners advance to tomorrow’s championship final, where the eventual winner of the B-
Division will gain promotion to the A-Division at next year’s championship.
Women’s News and Results
Jamaica 18 Kenya 1 – The Jamaican women’s team of Madeleine Spurgeon, Stephanie Chen, Margot
Shepherd-Spurgeon and Alexandra Marriott completed the round robin yesterday with a victory over
Kenya in six ends.
Jamaica scored 6 points in the 3rd end to take a 9-0 lead, and followed that up with 3 points in the 4th end and another 5 points in the 5th end. Kenya scored their lone point in the 6th and final end before conceding the game. Kenya played the entire game with only 3 players.
As a result, Jamaica completes the round robin in third place with a record of 5 wins, 2 losses. They
finished with the same record as the Philippines, but own the tiebreaker as they had defeated the
Philippines in round robin play.
The Jamaican women will play against Kazakhstan in the semi-final today at 3:00pm (Jamaican time).
Kazakhstan won the round robin meeting between the two teams earlier this week by a score of 7-4.
The other women’s semi-final will be contested between Australia and the Philippines.
Men’s News and Results
Jamaica Wins by Forfeit vs. Nigeria – The Jamaican men’s curling team, comprised of Ian Robertson,
Andrew Walker, Don Johnston and Luke Samuels finished the round robin with a victory over Nigeria.
The Nigerian team was only able to field 3 players for the game, and one of their players suffered an
apparent injury in the 5th end and was not able to continue playing. World Curling rules state that a
team must have a minimum of three players on the ice at any time, so Nigeria forfeited the game.
Jamaica and Kazakhstan finish the round robin with identical 8-2 records, but Jamaica owns the tie
breaker from their 9-8 victory against Kazakhstan in the round robin and finishes in 2nd place. The two
teams will meet each other in today’s semi-final at 8:00pm (Jamaican time).
Hong Kong will play against the Philippines in the other men’s semi-final game.
