SIBLING DUO WIN CURLING JAMAICA MIXED DOUBLES NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Hamilton, ON, Canada – The sibling duo of Stephanie Chen and Justin Chen are Jamaica’s new mixed doubles curling champions, after emerging victorious in Curling Jamaica’s third annual Jamaica Mixed Doubles National Championship at Dundas Valley Golf & Curling Club in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
The best-of-three championship final was contested between the Chen siblings and the team of Margot Shepherd-Spurgeon and Andrew Walker, a rematch of the 2024 final where Shepherd-Spurgeon and Walker defeated the Chen siblings to clinch last year’s championship.
Game 1 was a closely contested match, with the team of Shepherd-Spurgeon and Walker prevailing by 9-8 score in extra time. Shepherd-Spurgeon and Walker tied the game at 8-8 to force the 9th and deciding end, and then scored a single point in the extra end to win Game 1.
The Chen siblings responded in Game 2 with a strong start, eventually prevailing by an 11-3 score to tie the series at one game each. Shepherd-Spurgeon and Walker conceded the game after 6 ends.
In Game 3, Shepherd-Spurgeon and Walker seemed to run out of energy against their younger opponents, and the Chen siblings won the deciding game by a 10-4 score to capture the title of Jamaica’s National Mixed Doubles champions.
As a result of being crowned national champions, Stephanie Chen and Justin Chen have earned the right to represent Jamaica at the next World Championship Qualifying Tournament for mixed doubles, which is normally held in December of each year.
The Chen siblings will be the third mixed doubles team to represent Jamaica at this qualifying
tournament, and also seek to be the first Jamaican team to advance past the round robin stage. The previous teams of Shepherd-Spurgeon / Walker (2024) and Madeleine Spurgeon / Ian Robertson (2023) did not advance to the knockout stage.
